    Immunizing Your Child

How Effective or Ineffective Are Vaccines?

Despite the use of vaccines in providing added immunity to the body, there are still a number of people who view them otherwise. To them, vaccines are unnecessary and, in fact, sources of injurious body damage. Contradictions against vaccination have been around for a lot years.

    The Case of Thimerosal

There are a couple of vaccines that contain the substance called thimerosal. These vaccines are administered to young children. They are utilized to contribute immunity against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and influenza. Starting from 1997, thimerosal utilization is starting to diminish in a number of industrialized countries following the recommendation of dissimilar health authorities. However, there are still trace amounts of chemicals discovered in some vaccines.

    Vaccine Controversy

During the late 1990s, vaccine controversy became worse in the United Kingdom and the United States when a study reported a probable association between autism and bowel troubles and MMR vaccines. This report gained worldwide media attention, which ultimately led to the drop of MMR vaccine in the UK. Also, as a response to this report, there were a lot studies conducted, which didn’t confirm the initial findings.

During 2004 and 2005, Wales and England underwent a sudden increase of individuals infected with mumps. The disease was very rampant among young adults and adolescents. These individuals were either too old to receive MMR vaccination by the time the initial reports were published or they were too young to acquire natural mumps while still a child. Thus, there was what we call a “herd” immunity effect. Because there was decline of mumps cases when the MMR vaccine was introduced, these people were not laid bare to the illness. Yet they didn’t have any form of immunity. So when the sickness reemerged, these people became vulnerable to the infection.

    Alternative Health Care Versus Vaccines

Opposition to vaccine comes from dissimilar sectors in the community, especially those who are championing alternative health care. In fact, so strong was their campaign that they even promote the use of alternative treatments in lieu of traditional vaccinations.

Possible General Serious Side Effects of Vaccines

There are some parents who wouldn’t let their children undergo immunization. This is also similar to some cases of adults. These people believe that side effects of vaccines far outnumber their benefits. Those who champion the use of vaccines, however, reason that their side effects are less grave or are rare compared to ultimately developing the disease.

    Vaccine Efficiency

In general, vaccines don’t hold any guarantee of the body’s immunity against a clear cut disease. There are periods when the immune system of the body won’t react positively to the vaccine or are inherently weak. This can happen to people who are suffering from HIV infection or diabetes, or users of steroids. It can also be that the immune system of the human being isn’t capable of producing B-cells which can aid produce antibodies in relation to the antigen introduced by the vaccine.

    Concerns on Safety

Vaccination skeptics are pointing out the safety of vaccines themselves and their worries center around the average ingredients present in these vaccines. For example, mercury present in thimerosal can add to the development of PDD (pervasive developmental disorder), which can include autism. This disorder is one of the main problems in Amish populations, though Old Order Amish seems to not exhibit this health predicament. Certain drug companies also used aluminum in order to reinforce immune response. There are also the potential variations in human genes to increase the occurrence of injury events associated to vaccines. Lastly, formaldehyde and other heavy metals found in vaccines may prove to be unsafe when injected in human beings.

    Religious Arguments against Vaccination

Different religious sectors are opposed to the use of vaccines. In its earliest introduction, Christians believe that if a patient should die of smallpox, then it’s accordance with God’s will. Vaccination is going against what is bound to happen. This justification still persists until today, as evident by Family Research Council. They believe that the potential susceptibility of human beings to sexual diseases discourage sexual promiscuity. Mandatory vaccinations, however, encourage it.

It should be remembered that for every advantage, there’s a disadvantage. Despite the negative criticisms of vaccines, they are still one of your best defenses against illnesses. So why don’t you take the risk?
